I bet you are wondering who is Left of the Dot Media? Well, we just won the 2015 Community Engagement Award at the Technology Impact Awards put on by the BCTIA.  And so, now we are famous (well, at least in our own minds).  But really, this was a very meaningful award for us as 5 years ago our co-founders made a huge decision to locate our offices out here in Maple Ridge.  We wanted to live and work in the same community so that we could give back in ways that were meaningful to all “Lefties” (this is what we call ourselves).
At the heart of our business is a…dare we say it…revolutionary new mobile app called YO! which launched at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in March 2015.  In brief, YO! is a free app that empowers users to share and connect without the Internet.  This includes chatting, calling, messaging, sending large files (apps, photos, videos, music) to those most relevant in your life…all without traversing up and across the Internet.  This allows data to move at extremely high speeds, off-the-grid, and for free – a true empowering innovation for emerging markets.  Our mission is to connect every person on the planet.  Yep.  Every single one of them.

Left of the Dot Media is also the parent company of a number of successful brands.  Established in 2010, Left of the Dot Media turns million dollar domain names into multi-million dollar businesses.  This includes the evolving web properties,,,,, and many more.
We recently moved into some new office digs out here in Maple Ridge a few months ago (we would argue it is the coolest office space in the Fraser Valley), complete with ping pong table and espresso machine (although we don’t fully understand how to use it yet, but we are learning). If you do commute, it is only 40 minutes against traffic from downtown Vancouver, and as we are just across the Golden Ears Bridge, we are extremely convenient to all the talented people in the Tri-Cities, Langley, Surrey, Mission, New West and all points in between.  Just think of all the time you will save from commuting!

About the Job 

So what will you be doing?

  • You would start off by working closely with three of our web brands:,, and
  • Assist Marketing Manager with digital marketing campaigns and plans that support business and brand
  • Assist Marketing Manager with email marketing campaigns, including template designs, calls-to-action, and copy used in our email sends
  • Managing the company social media accounts. Determine way to increase engagement and grow audience.
  • Measure and report marketing related activities against pre-determined ROI objectives
  • Write, review and edit copy deliverables across multiple brands
  • Assist in the creation of innovative, effective go-to-market programs that drive revenue and grow usage
  • Work with various internal teams to address service queries, resolve bug issues and serve as an ambassador for our brands.
  • We have hundreds of people calling into our travel brands every month looking for all sorts of things: recommendations of places to stay, questions about how the brands work, opportunities to list their homes with our sites, etc. We may need your assistance with some of this volume as our support needs increase beyond our current staffing capacity (although this would be a minor part of the job). This includes answering client phone calls, emails, support questions, etc… But this is NOT a tele-sales/tele-support role. Your role on the phone, or when you are answering email inquiries (or perhaps live chat if we think it may be worth trying) is to learn from our clients about how we might improve the brands and give our clients a better overall experience. Speaking with clients should also uncover new business opportunities that we can take advantage of.
  • “Other duties as required.” Yes, we know you often see this requirement on a lot of job descriptions, but we really mean it. We are a small team who has everyone hands on in building and growing the brand. Other duties may involve aspects of search engine marketing, content creation, business development, or office admin. We are not afraid to teach, assuming you are not afraid to learn.

Essential Skills

  • You’re no dummy and have a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent College + Life experience
  • 1 to 3 years of marketing, business management, or applicable sales/support experience
  • Solid technical understanding: not as a programmer, but is someone who is comfortable enough to know not to infect yourself with spyware and can work in MS Word, MS Excel, and jump in and add content to a blog if asked (bonus points if you have built and maintained a website recently)
  • A passion for customer happiness and an upbeat, engaging personality
  • You have high expectations of yourself and others
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Useful Things

  • Knowledge/curiosity of web marketing, email marketing, SEO, PPC, affiliate marketing, re-marketing, and lead generation
  • Knowledge/curiosity of website analytics (Google Analytics, CrazyEgg, Woopra, or similar)
  • Knowledge/curiosity of A/B or multivariate testing
  • Knowledge/curiosity on the trends in social media and have set up or managed corporate accounts for a business or non-profit
  • Knowledge/curiosity in the hospitality and tourism vertical as several of our businesses are in this market
  • Experience and patience for customer support without being overly sarcastic (a little bit is fine)
  • Experience with market research and business planning
  • Knowledge (and willingness) that sometimes it requires we work around the clock – not because someone is poking you with a sharp stick, but because you want to and you realize that in 5 years you don’t want to bored with same job, but have advanced on merit and talent


  • You must be a risk taker who has a passion for entrepreneurism.
  • We still classify ourselves as a Startup even though we are an international team of 80+ (We are presently approx. 20 in Maple Ridge and 60+ in Bangladesh. As such, you must want to work in a Startup.
  • You realize that failure is an option, because failure means that you have started
  • Maybe you have worked in a junior marketing role, or maybe you are fresh out of college/university and can’t wait to dive into the real world of marketing, but in any scenario, you had wished to be part of a smaller team where you would have a direct impact on the business as a whole
  • You must be a self-starter and be able to manage yourself and your projects
  • You can self-learn as things change; and quickly, because learning is something that you have to do daily
  • You should be up-to-date on your Internet memes (that way you know if we are laughing at you or with you). Bonus points if you have earned a whack of karma on reddit.
  • You should want to build something really cool, so that in a couple of years we all say, “Wow! Look what we’ve built together”
  • You must believe in the mantra of “Work hard, play hard.”
  • You must be able to laugh at yourself and roll with the punches
  • You must tolerate animals (On any given day, we may have a dog in the office. Or sometimes a cat. Though never together. That day was not a good one).
  • You don’t have to be good at Darts or Foosball or ping pong, but you should be willing to learn or you will constantly lose and be the one doing the coffee run to Waves on 207th

While your salary will be competitive and based on your experience, we believe that as we build this out together, we can all share in the upside and increase compensation as revenues increase for the brands you are involved in.
