Junior Systems Administrator / Internal Support: Maple Ridge, BC

Do you live and breathe computers?  Do you love fixing things?  If yes, we may have a job for you…if not, you may want to look at our other job postings.  We are looking for a Junior Systems Administrator who will also provide Internal Support for our rapidly growing company out here in Maple Ridge.
Have you heard of Left?  We would love it if you just shouted, “Yes, that company is super cool and I want to work for them”.  If you didn’t, don’t worry, here is our back story.  We are using technology and innovation to solve some of the world’s biggest problems – the biggest of which, we believe, is connectivity in emerging markets.  We believe that a connected world is a better world. Our vision is to connect the next billion through our innovative technology for a fully decentralized, mobile mesh that is true peer-to-peer.
But wait, that’s not all the awesome stuff we are working on. A few of the brands in the Left Travel (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Left) portfolio include: RentByOwner.com, RentalHomes.com, BedroomVillas.com, SellOffRentals.com, and many more.
If you are the right candidate, you are excited to provide general to technical internal support for Left and be passionate about making things run more efficiently.  We have 30 local staff and are expecting to grow over the next 6 months. As such, we need someone who can keep the growing team working at peak efficiency. We are looking for a junior systems, support, and network administrator to join our team.  Your primary responsibility will be to ensure that employees are able to function properly and will provide support for both software and hardware.  You may also be tasked with office infrastructure changes and System Administration tasks on our systems and servers running in Amazon’s Cloud services (AWS).
So, do you know where Maple Ridge is?  Would you be surprised to hear that it is a mere 40 minutes against traffic from downtown Vancouver, which makes our office totally accessible to many regions in Greater Vancouver?  We are just across the Golden Ears Bridge or Pitt River Bridge depending on where you are coming from.  Just think how much time you would gain in your life from a shorter commute to work, plus you would be working on exciting projects with a dynamic team of individuals.  Our award-winning Community Engagement Program and our top-notch culture have led us to win an award as “Best Workplace BC” and be recognized by the BC Tech Association as the best in BC for “work, life, and play”.
We are Left, and we say we like to do things right! Come on, you know you want to join us!!

About the Job

So what will you be doing?

  • Act as a first point of contact for all internal user support and external client support matters
  • Monitoring and maintenance of company hardware and software
  • Monitoring and maintenance of peripherals such as printers and scanners
  • Decision making for both hardware and software to be used day to day
  • Creating and maintaining documentation of IT processes and issues
  • Assisting in shaping the IT infrastructure of a growing company
  • Other duties as required.

Essential Skills

  • Computer Science degree/diploma or a combination of work experience and technical certifications
  • 1+ years of network and support experience
  • Strong knowledge of Windows
  • Knowledge about network installation, and network security
  • Good general understanding of troubleshooting for Windows and Mac software
  • Knowledge of Linux/Unix based systems used as services
  • Troubleshooting and problem solving skills
  • You have high expectations of yourself and others
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English

 Useful Things

  • Experience with Microsoft software support (Office 365, Active Directory, apps)
  • Experience managing Linux servers
  • Experience with Amazon AWS and scaling
  • You consider yourself a thought leader and demonstrate this via blogging, networking at industry events, or speaking at conferences (or at least a willingness to try)
  • Knowledge (and willingness to accept) that sometimes it requires we work around the clock — not because someone is poking you with a sharp stick, but because you want to and we need to
  • Knowledge that you don’t know everything and that we don’t know everything, but if we put our heads together, we can probably figure it out at least as well as anyone else.

  • You take it as a personal challenge when something doesn’t work. Random Outlook error message?  Fight it tooth and nail until you can access email again.  Linux won’t boot?  Spend all morning on StackOverflow until you beat it back into submission!
  • You are entrepreneurial. This means you know failure is an option, but you appreciate that when you learn from failure, that is often when the impossible becomes possible.
  • We still classify ourselves as a Startup even though we are an international team of 90+ (We are presently 30 in Maple Ridge and 60+ in Bangladesh). As such, you must want to work in a Startup environment.
  • You love fixing things, whether that is your mom’s 10 year old archaic computer that should really just be used as a boat anchor or updating your laptop with the latest custom Linux distribution or custom proxy software to avoid the system administration block on reddit.
  • You must be a self-starter and able to take initiative and manage your own projects.
  • You can self-learn as things change; and quickly, because learning must be ongoing and things change often.
  • We are dog positive; Django is our Director of Greetings and he outranks most of us.
  • You must believe in the mantra of “Work hard, play hard.”
  • You must be able to laugh at yourself and roll with the punches
